Major agricultural powers, including the European Union, the United States, Canada and Australia, pledged on Friday to ensure world food security despite shocks from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine .
“We are committed to working together to ensure that there is enough food for everyone, including the poorest, the most vulnerable and the displaced”, write these 51 members of the World Organization of the trade in a joint statement.
They also promise to keep agricultural and food markets “open, predictable and transparent by not imposing unjustified trade restrictive measures” on agri-food products or key products for agricultural production.
The signatory members also stress that the emergency measures taken to deal with the situation must cause the least distortion possible, be temporary, targeted and proportional.
They are still demanding that the products purchased by the World Food Program – on the front line in an attempt to compensate for the losses incurred on the world agricultural market from the gigantic Ukrainian production of grain or oil – be free from any export restrictions or bans. .
Russia and Ukraine are two major exporters of wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower oil. Russia is also the world’s largest supplier of fertilizers and gas.
The Russian offensive in Ukraine on February 24 and the economic sanctions that rained down on Moscow interrupted deliveries of wheat and other foodstuffs from the two countries, sending food prices soaring as well as those of fuels, in particular in emerging countries.
