The French government announced, Wednesday, May 4, an emergency plan to reduce the delays in issuing identity papers. Good news for many French people.

In the town hall of Saint-Chinian (Herault)some have been waiting since dawn to get the precious sesame: an identity document. To obtain a simple appointment, it takes on average 65 days, against barely twelve a year ago. Extended deadlines due to the catch-up of post-Covid-19 requests. To deal with it, the government presented, Wednesday, May 4, an emergency plan to speed up the process.

With this new plan, identity papers expired less than five years ago will remain valid for school exams and driver’s license registration. Professional requests will be given priority. 160 agents have also just been hired in the prefectures, an increase of 30% workforce. The objective is to process, by the summer period, 50,000 additional requests each week.
