Four people died in a road accident involving a car in the wrong direction, Wednesday evening around 10 p.m., on the A1 motorway near Izel-lès-Équerchin, in Pas-de-Calais, reported France Bleu Nord Thursday, May 5. A car going the wrong way collided with another coming in front.

According to the first elements of the investigation, it was a 60-year-old woman from Belgium who caused the accident. She was traveling in the Lille-Paris direction and arrived at the Fresnes-lès-Montauban toll, she would have turned around to take the A1 in the opposite direction.

The sexagenarian died in the frontal impact which occurred a few kilometers further, around 10 p.m. In the other vehicle, a 21-year-old man who was driving, a 19-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy who was seriously injured. Transported in absolute urgency to the Lille University Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries a little later. According to information from France Bleu Nord, they were from of Hannescamps, a town of 200 inhabitants south of Arras.

The highway was closed during the emergency response. About twenty firefighters from Pas-de-Calais intervened. An investigation has been opened by the gendarmerie to try to better understand the circumstances of this accident.
