Insubordination, media of rebellious France, mentions “11.3 trillion stolen by 35 heads of state and 130 billionaires” when discussing the subject of the Pandora Papers. Same indignation and same figures for Nathalie Arthaud of Lutte Ouvrière.
After the Panama Papers, here are the Pandora Papers. For months, 600 journalists from 150 media went through 12 million documents from firms specializing in the creation of offshore companies. In particular, at the end of this gigantic investigation, 130 billionaires and 35 political leaders were pinned, including the Czech Prime Minister and Tony Blair. But the revelation of this waltz of millions of offshore has made some media and politicians lose control.
Thus, evoking a ” global earthquake “, Insubordination, media of rebellious France, mentions ” 11.3 trillion stolen by 35 heads of state and 130 billionaires “. Same indignation and same figures for Nathalie Arthaud of Lutte Ouvrière, ensuring on Twitter : ” 130 billionaires for 11.3 trillion dollars “. That’s a lot of zeros, but it’s also based on a lot of confusion.
This astronomical amount of 11.3 trillion dollars, or 10 trillion euros, is well cited by the media having participated in this investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. But this is, as specified on the consortium’s website, an estimate made by the OECD in 2020, of assets held in offshore locations around the world. That is more than 84 million bank accounts. It is not therefore a question of tax evasion of the only 130 billionaires and 35 heads of state pinned in the Pandora Papers, contrary to what some have understood.
Let us also add that it is a little misleading to speak, as the Insubordination does, of 11.3 trillion dollars ” stolen “. The fact that such an amount is placed in offshore accounts means that this money largely escapes tax in the country of origin. But that obviously does not mean that the shortfall for the authorities is equivalent to this sum.
