A driver gets 21 months

A driver who led a police chase from Shawinigan to Boucherville with stolen cars was sentenced to 21 months in prison on Tuesday at the Montreal courthouse.

Alexandre Brière, 41, had committed his crimes in June 2020. Heavily intoxicated, he first hit a vehicle by the roadside before attacking a woman, then another in order to steal his car.

In his flight, he caught another driver, to drive to Montreal where he caused two collisions, before stealing another car. He was finally arrested by patrol officers, from whom he tried to steal their vehicle.

Mental Health

Fortunately, the victims who crossed the road to Brière did not suffer serious injuries and do not have any sequelae from the incidents, it was mentioned to the court on Tuesday.

Since the events, Brière has undergone therapy in order to alleviate his mental health and addiction problems, so much so that the parties have arrived at a joint suggestion of 21 months in prison.

He will then have to respect a 3-year probation, during which he will have to perform 200 hours of community work. He will also be banned from driving for 5 years upon his release from prison.
