Dolphins are said to be trained and used by the Russian army as defensive weapons in the port of Sevastopol, located in the south of Ukraine and Russia.
In two marine parks at the entrance to the port of Sevastopol, in Crimea, the Russians would train dolphins to protect the naval base. This strategic Black Sea port was annexed by Russia in 2014. The dolphins are said to be trained to spot the enemy. “Dolphins’ intelligence and sonar capability allows them to detect intruders, for example Ukrainian special forces who may attempt to mine and blow up Russian ships in ports”explains General Vincent Desportes, professor of strategy at Sciences Po and HEC.
During the Cold War, Dolphins were trained to search for mines and deploy explosives near enemy ships. Did Vladimir Putin repeat the process? In 2019, a beluga strapped to a camera was observed off the coast of Norway with the inscription “St. Petersburg equipment”.
