On the sidelines of the war in Ukraine, a tug of war is being played out around gas and its supply. Journalist Julien Gasparutto was live from Brussels (Belgium), Monday May 2.

For member countries of the European Union (EU), “no question of paying their bills in rubles, at the risk of having their gas cut off by Moscow (Russia)”reports journalist Julien Gasparutto, live from Brussels (Belgium) for the 20 Hours of France 2, Monday May 2. “This is what happened to Poland and Bulgaria last week and this is what could happen to other countries in the coming days”, he adds. The 27 EU countries do not want to give in to Russian blackmail. “To pay in rubles is to violate the sanctions”said the European Commission on Monday.

“To anticipate possible shortages, the Europeans have today made progress on common gas stocks and mutual assistance mechanisms between the different countries. Tomorrow, the European Commission will make its proposals on an embargo on Russian oil”, continues the journalist. As with gas, dependence on Russian oil is significant since it represents a third of European imports.
