“I do not want the Socialist Party to become the subsidiary of La France insoumise”, Senator Patrick Kanner said on franceinfo on Sunday May 1. Negotiations between the PS and LFI to reach an agreement for the legislative elections were interrupted for the evening while Europe Ecology – The Greens debated during a federal council.

For the president of the socialist group in the Senate, the European question is at the heart of the disagreements with La France insoumise. “Jean-Luc Mélenchon says that we will not leave Europe during this mandate, which means that we could do it in another. If it is not a red line, I do not know what it is”he argued, defending the European commitment of the PS, “which we hold as the apple of our eyes”.

“Olivier Faure and those who negotiate will have to hear it, including by an appeal to the activists who will have to choose”he warned, explaining that he had very little contact with the First Secretary of his party. “If this line is the new line of the PS, it will create problems”he judged, adding that he was “very worried”.
According to him, LFI lacks a “electoral continuity” to claim to embody “the central force” to the left. “LFI has won no big city, no department, no region and has no senator”he remarked. “LFI is strong at once, but the PS remains powerful.”
He believes that there are “points to improve, all this must lead to a balanced and respectful negotiation”. If agreed, he says he will not leave the PS. “I don’t want to leave the family I lived with for so many years”he justified himself.
