To Mariupolthe civilians entrenched in the Azovstal factory, besieged by the Russians, were able to leave the site on Sunday 1 May. In the partly destroyed port city, Russian tanks continue to patrol and fire on buildings.
An evacuation bus marked with a “Z”, which takes the road to Mariupol (Ukraine) in the middle of the night, supervised by medical vehicles: the Russians broadcast these images in order to show the evacuation of about twenty Ukrainian civilians. The Ukrainian nationalist group Azov confirms theinformation, but stay cautious. “It is hoped that these people will go well in the direction that was negotiated, namely in a territory controlled by Ukraine“, details Sviatoslav Palamarthe commander of the nationalist group Azov.
Civilians had refugees in the factory Azovstalthe last pocket of resistance of Mariupol. The city is besieged, constantly bombarded by Russian forces. In the basements, there would still be dozens of civilians, as well as Ukrainian soldiers who refuse to surrender. Some people would be injured. Meanwhile, Russian tanks continue to shell the city.
