The NHLPA executive board voted to form a search committee to find a successor to Fehr. The vote to this effect ended Friday evening, at 8:15 p.m. The discussions had begun last Monday, by videoconference.

Seven players have been named to lead this committee: Ian Cole (Carolina Hurricanes), Justin Faulk (St. Louis Blues), Sam Gagner (Detroit Red Wings), Zach Hyman (Edmonton Oilers), Kyle Okposo ( Buffalo Sabres), Nate Schmidt (Winnipeg Jets) and Kevin Shattenkirk (Anaheim Ducks).

Other players could be added to this group by July.

Donald Fehr has served as the Players Association’s chief executive since 2010. He will remain in charge until his successor is appointed.

An independent investigation had recently found that Fehr, among others, was not responsible for wrongdoing in the Kyle Beach case. He was accused of failing to follow up on a report that a Chicago Blackhawks player was sexually assaulted by team staff in 2010.
