Justin Trudeau has not yet reopened the Canadian embassy in Kyiv, because he is not sure if it is safe enough for our diplomats, indicates the Globe and Mail. This did not prevent him the day before yesterday from refusing once again, at a press conference, to organize an airlift to evacuate the refugees from Poland to Canada in order to relieve this country which is crumbling under the flood of refugees ( and risks being the next to be bombed by Russia as well), citing in her response to reporters the fact that some of these women, who have had enough of being crammed into camps for six weeks, leave in desperation for Ukraine at war. According to Mr. Trudeau, it would be a good thing to send these women and children back to the war zone instead of offering them housing and support for a year in Canada, while the war ends and we rebuild houses, that we manage to start heating them again and supplying them with drinking water, etc. — which obviously cannot be done in time for next winter when we see the extent of the destruction that the country has suffered. Find the error.
When will the end of hypocrisy and inefficiency, and the return of common sense and humanism? Now is the time to save lives, and it is truly heartbreaking to see the government’s attitude toward these women and children. Canada can and must do better than that: it is our responsibility as NATO countries in the rear to take in these refugees and free Poland and Moldova, which, although much smaller and more at risk that we — as they are directly on the front line — have done a hundred times more for these refugees. It is wrong to let these countries continue to take over most of the human flow, and it should be remembered that President Zelensky advised refugees not to return to Ukraine for the time being. Except that for this to work, real medium- and long-term opportunities must be offered to these women and children: they cannot remain piled up on top of each other indefinitely in camps, and Poland and Moldova cannot manage to do more, given the number of people they have each taken in.
Canada must do its part and install them in our cities and communities for at least a year, with the heart that we would want others to have for us, if we were in their place. Let’s forget about the NDP’s dentistry plan and manage this emergency in a way that saves lives; we will come back to the rest later.
