The European Union has adopted the “digital services act” which should help to create a safer digital space for citizens, for example by combating disinformation or online hatred.
It’s a revolution on the Internet: the “digital services act”, a digital legislation adopted by the European Union. It must make it possible to fight against misinformation, online hatred or even the sale of counterfeit products. Europe wants to strengthen moderation on social networks and thus create a safer digital space for its citizens.
Fines for companies that do not follow the guidelines
With the “digital services act”, web giants like Amazon or Facebook will have to remove illegal content posted on their platform themselves. Hate messages, such as those that led to the murder of Samuel Paty for example, will have to disappear from social networks as soon as they are posted online. The same goes for the false information that prompted the QAnon group to storm the Capitol in Washington (United States) last year. If they do not comply with European directives, companies risk a fine of up to 6% of their turnover. This is in addition to “digital market art” which must tackle the anti-competitive practices of the digital giants.
