It has been almost two months since war broke out in Ukraine on Friday 22 April. In the east of the country, the fate of Mariupol remains uncertain. The Russians claim to have taken control of the city, but what is it really?
Eastern Mariupolit now in the hands of the Russians, Friday, April 22? “In this Mariupol factory, Ukrainian fighters had entrenched themselves there (…) a bomb perforated the very thick concrete of the basement of this building”reports the special envoy of France Télévisions, Luc Lacroix, present on the spot at Mariupol. “This factory is now controlled by Russians and separatists like the majority of the city of Mariupol”he continues.
“They call it filtration. The civilians are carefully screened. There is a deceptive calm here. We hear bombardments at regular intervals”explains the journalist. The bombardments come mainly from the sector of the factoryAzovstal. “A factory that Vladimir Putin said he did not want to attack, only besiege”he concludes.
