[Critique] “Mandolin on Stage”, Raffaele La Ragione

Francesco Corti is on the way to becoming a pillar of the Arcana catalog. As a harpsichordist, he recorded Bach and Handel. Here he is in the role of conductor for a very pleasant disc starring Raffaele La Ragione and three old instruments skilfully chosen by him to interpret 18th century mandolin concertos.and century. The musical journey takes us from Concerto in C major RV 425 from Vivaldi to Concerto in G by Johann Nepomuk Hummel dating from 1799, of a very different sound universe and type of virtuosity. Between the two, a concerto by Francesco Lecce and a concerto attributed to Giovanni Paisiello. The brilliant virtuosity of the soloist is captured by a sound recording that ideally solves the problem of the balance between the frail instrument and the orchestra. Francesco Corti’s excellent idea is to use orchestral movements to provide a “musical air” between the concertos. From sinfoniae or movements of Galuppi, Paisiello and Haydn are thus perfectly chosen in the context of this original album.
