Several bosses of CAC40 companies have seen their remuneration increase between 2020 and 2021. An increase in wages which is explained by several factors.
For the first time, the average compensation of the big bosses of the CAC40 almost doubled last year: it went from 4.5 million euros in 2020 to 8.7 million euros in 2021. This is explained in particular by the outbreak of exceptional bonuses, more than three million euros on average, remuneration multiplied by 14 in one year. CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares has become its symbol with his controversial remuneration of 19 million euros, including 1.7 million euros in exceptional bonus for having succeeded in merging Citroën and Fiat-Chrysler.
This increase in wages is also explained by the rise in stock market prices with, in the case of the CAC40 index, an increase of almost 30% over the year. The valuation of shares allocated to executives has inflated. For their part, managers also grant themselves higher fixed salaries. In total, CAC40 companies have approached 160 billion euros in profits.
