A new hepatitis, which affects children under the age of 10, is causing concern for the World Health Organization. Dozens of cases have been identified in the United Kingdom, and two suspected cases are, Tuesday, April 19, under surveillance in France.
In a few weeks, several dozen children under the age of 10, suffering from an unknown form of hepatitis, had to be hospitalized. 74 cases have been identified in the United Kingdom, 9 in the United States, 3 in Spain and several others in Europe. Public Health France has asked hospitals to monitor suspicious clinical pictures throughout the territory. No cases of acute hepatitis have been identified, but two are under investigation.
The disease worries British health authorities. The usual hepatitis A, B, C, D and E viruses are not involved, so others are sought in patients. “There’s a virus called adenovirus that has been found not in all but a number of cases, so that’s one of the hypotheses”, explains Professor Yazdan Yazdanpanah, specialist in infectious pathologies at the Bichat Hospital (AP-HP) in Paris. One certainty: the vaccine against Covid-19 is not in question. New cases are expected to arise in the coming days.
