A new round of sanctions against Russia is coming. The Italian government announced on Tuesday 19 April that the European Union and the United States have succeeded in “a broad consensus on the need to increase pressure on the Kremlin, in particular through the adoption of new sanctions“. The allies also agreed on the need “to increase the international isolation of Moscow” as the war in Ukraine approaches 60 days.
The Italian announcement was confirmed by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a tweet: “We will again strengthen our sanctions against Russia.”
World leaders firmly stand together in support of Ukraine.
We will further tighten our sanctions against Russia and step up financial and security assistance for Ukraine.
Thank you @POTUS for agreeing this important call.

This position was taken during a virtual meeting devoted to the Russian offensive in Ukraine between US President Joe Biden and the main allies of the United States, at a time when Moscow has unleashed a new phase of his attack.
The Italian government press release also speaks of “the common commitment to diversify energy sources thereby reducing dependence on Russian supplies has been reaffirmed” during this videoconference.
