Four cases of avian flu confirmed in Quebec

A fourth Quebec farm is struck by avian flu, confirmed the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) on Sunday.

This new case was detected in a commercial farm of the MCR Les sources in Estrie. Four RCMs in Estrie are affected by H5N1 avian influenza. The previous cases were detected at two commercial and one non-commercial farms earlier in the week.

“The infected sites have been quarantined. The CFIA has established movement control measures and recommends that other farms in the region increase biosecurity,” the federal agency said.

Remember that avian flu mainly affects birds. The risk of transmission to humans is therefore low. In the rare cases where the virus is transmitted to humans, there is close and prolonged contact in a closed environment with infected birds.
