Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe has not disclosed the nature of the injury, but considers it to be minor.
“At this time I would say that his case is being assessed daily,” said the Maple Leafs pilot. It’s really more preventative than anything else. We give him the evening off and we will see later. »
Matthews suffered the injury in the Queen City team’s 5-4 win Saturday night against their Ontario rivals, the Ottawa Senators.
The American center player has tallied 58 goals and 102 points in 70 games this season. He distinguished himself by scoring 51 goals in 50 games during the campaign, becoming the first player since 1996 to achieve the feat.
After the game against the Islanders, the Maple Leafs will host the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.
