In the north of the Netherlands, the tranquility of the village of Woltersum, 365 inhabitants, is regularly disturbed by earthquakes. Laurens Mengerink has lived here for 30 years, and is constantly repairing his house. A nearby gas field regularly causes earthquakes. To limit the nuisance, the government had planned to stop the activity within two years, but if the gas were to run out, it no longer refrains from continuing it.

Against all odds, he can count on the support of Laurens Mengerink. Despite the cracks that accumulate and after having fought against the gas activity, the latter has changed his mind. To stop dependence on Russia, he says he is in favor of continuing extraction, under certain conditions. “We must create a fund to repair the houses, but it should be prevention, and not after the fact“, he confides. According to a poll, the majority of the inhabitants of the region would be in favor of the continuation of the gas activity.
