The cultural fatigue of French Canada

Said Hubert Aquin in 1962, in summary: the ambivalence of French Canadians as a people in the face of the songs of North American consumer sirens, drop it or move on!

For a time, the Parti Québécois had found its own solution to respond to the demographic insecurity of its people: give them their own country. Today, following the election in Marie-Victorin, the observation must be made: the anti-sovereignist forces—the CAQ, the Conservatives and the Liberal Party—are far superior to the sovereignist vote as a whole, and that likely to continue.

So what to do? I dare say, if the solution is not effective, the solution must be changed! How ? First, get back to basics: a country always begins with a people. And this people deserves attention. That even in this constitutional straitjacket which is ours, it can flourish. This is the real challenge of the Parti Québécois, while Québec solidaire disqualifies itself from the outset as a unifier of this people by its victimary dogmatism…

So, I start dreaming of a people that welcomes immigration mainly of French mother tongue. I also dream of a people who demand equal treatment for francophones for their own post-secondary students. I also dream of a people who refuse to be subject to a monarchy or a foreign parliament. I dream of a people who, forty years later, still radically refuse to comply with an imposed constitution and charter of rights. I dream of a people who, rather than being bought off, says no to any outside intervention in their areas of competence. I finally dream of a people that the words “willing” and “power” no longer frighten.
