The Toronto Blue Jays had an opportunity to win their four-game series against the Yankees on Thursday at Yankee Stadium, but the New York team instead leveled it by winning 3-0.
Charlie Montoyo’s men were thus cleared in their two defeats against the Bronx Bombers, who had taken the honors of the second duel 4 to 0.
In the game of the day, the Blue Jays were very quiet offensively, they who managed only five hits. Crowd favorite starting pitcher Luis Severino (1-0) earned the win by keeping them quiet. The gunner allowed two base hits and as many walks in five innings of work, in addition to passing six Jays in the mitt.
The visitors still offered themselves an opportunity to extract the victory from the Yankees in the ninth inning. They took advantage of a rare bad outing by Aroldis Chapman, a saves specialist, to get three walks from him and fill the bases. Michael King, however, came to relieve his teammate and passed George Springer in the mitt before forcing Bo Bichette to compromise in a double play.
The Yankees weren’t much more dangerous at the plate, but Jose Trevino hurt the lone Canadian team in major league baseball, hitting two singles in the third and fifth innings, respectively. Giancarlo Stanton drove in the other run.
The defeat also went to the record of Kevin Gausman (0-1), who spent five sets and two thirds on the mound. He allowed six of eight base hits, but he also left nine rivals in the dust.
The Blue Jays will now return north of the Canada-US border to begin a three-game series against the Oakland Athletics.
