Montrealer arrested for waving Nazi flag

Ottawa police arrested Montrealer Amine Batbouti on Thursday for waving a Nazi flag and chanting “hate slurs” in downtown Ottawa. The 34-year-old man was released pending trial.

On Saturday March 12, on Wellington Street, a stone’s throw from Parliament, Amine Batbouti was seen brandishing a Nazi flag and invective passers-by. He poses “obscene gestures and [lance] hateful slurs,” noted the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) in a statement announcing his arrest.

“No one was injured in this incident,” said the SPO.

On Thursday April 14, Amine Batbouti surrendered himself to the Ottawa police to be arrested and charged with “public incitement to hatred”.

“The Ottawa Police does not tolerate hate-motivated incidents in any way, and will thoroughly investigate all reported cases,” it added, inviting the public to denounce this type of behavior.

The suspect was released on a promise to appear. The date of his trial is not yet known.
