(Lima) Hundreds of Peruvians demonstrated in Lima on Saturday at the call of political and civil organizations to demand the resignation of radical leftist President Pedro Castillo.

Waving red and white flags and signs that read “Castillo corrupt resign”, “Castillo out”, the demonstrators, some of whom were carrying pots, – a traditional form of protest in Latin America – chanted “Castillo resign now”. .
“The president must leave the country because there is too much corruption, he is unfit and will lead us to ruin,” said Ursula Portocarrero, an insurance company employee.
Some 3,000 riot police have been deployed across Lima.
“We want him to resign for the benefit of people who love their country and so that we can really move Peru forward,” said Tula Casado, 58.
A similar demonstration took place in the city of Trujillo, in the north of the country.
On the evening of April 4, a curfew was introduced in the capital and the neighboring port of Callao, where 10 million people live, after violent demonstrations by carriers against rising fuel costs.
It was finally lifted on April 5 under popular pressure and from Parliament, where the opposition has a majority.
But clashes between demonstrators and the police broke out the same evening in Lima, public buildings were attacked and businesses vandalized.
On April 4, protests took place in several regions of Peru against the rising cost of fuel and tolls, as well as food.
On April 6, a protester died in the city of Ica (about 300 km south of Lima).
At the end of March, Mr Castillo, 52, escaped impeachment by the parliament dominated by the right-wing opposition which had initiated proceedings for “moral incapacity”.
She accuses him in particular of having intervened in a case of alleged corruption operated by his entourage.
