CF Montreal snatches victory from Red Bulls

Two goals in the final 20 minutes gave CF Montreal a surprise win at Harrison, where late mistakes by the New York Red Bulls led to a 2-1 result on Saturday afternoon.

Recovered from COVID-19, Romell Quioto did not miss his chance to contribute again by scoring in the 81st minute. The Honduran took advantage of a monumental error by Carlos Coronel to spin alone in front of an abandoned cage. The Red Bulls goalkeeper received a ball badly in midfield and Quioto took the opportunity to steal it.

Rudy Camacho had threaded the needle 10 minutes earlier, with a header. Well served by the superb center of Alistair Johnston, the French scored a first goal in Major League Soccer this season.

Like his team, goalkeeper Sebastian Breza was shaky in the first half hour. CF Montreal let the Red Bulls orchestrate a fine counterattack in the 14th minute and Omir Fernandez beat the Quebecer with a shot that ricocheted off Camacho’s leg.

It’s a second victory in a row for the Bleu-Blanc-Noir, abroad moreover. Wilfried Nancy’s men beat FC Cincinnati 4-3 a week ago. The Foot Club will finally return to Stade Saputo next Saturday, when the Vancouver Whitecaps will be the visitors.
