In 1972, David Bowie went from shadow to light by creating the character of Ziggy. Back to the phenomenon.
Orange hair, exuberant outfits, it’s David Bowie and his artistic double, Ziggy Stardust, an offbeat character cut out for stardom. After four albums with confidential success, the artist finally sparkled on the pediments of concert halls. By discovering Ziggy, the world would discover Bowie. For his character, David Bowie was particularly inspired by the film 2001, a space odyssey. Ziggy is actually a real puzzle of the artist’s inspirations.
With this character, it is not only access to glory, but also a second chance for songs that have gone unnoticed. This is the case for example of the song Changes. In 1973, however, it was a turn of events: David Bowie announced the end of Ziggy. No reason is given, apart from an unconvincing excuse: he would have decided to change characters for each album. Whatever, Ziggy is passed down to posterity.
