Difficulty recruiting labor obliges, Ottawa further relaxes certain rules of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
Among other changes, it will now be possible for employers in seven sectors that offer low wages and where there are “clear shortages” to hire up to 30% of these foreign workers rather than 20%.
These seven sectors include accommodation and food services, wood products and food manufacturing. The measure will come into force on April 30 for a period of one year.
The limit for all other employers offering low-wage jobs will increase from 10% to 20% under this Temporary Foreign Worker Program.
Other relaxations regarding the duration of seasonal jobs in the fishing industry, for example, were also announced Monday by the federal Minister of Employment and Workforce Development, Carla Qualtrough.
These flexibilities delight the Conseil du patronat du Québec. Its president, Karl Blackburn, believes that this brings a breath of fresh air to employers who are struggling to recruit workers.
He hopes that the federal government will now speed up the processing of files and that the two levels of government will work more closely together.
