(Paris) The Polish Iga Swiatek, assured of ascending the throne of women’s tennis for several days, officially became the new world N.1 on Monday, the day after her victory in Miami.
Posted at 9:48 a.m.
After the unexpected retirement of the Australian Ashleigh Barty, Swiatek only had to cross the third round in Florida to become the new queen of the WTA circuit.
The 20-year-old player, revealed by her triumph at Roland-Garros in 2020, passed in one quarter of the 8and in the first place in the world, thanks to his semi-final at the Australian Open in January and his double success at the WTA 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami in March-April.
Tired, she was able to withdraw from the Charleston tournament without fear of being dethroned, since she has nearly 2000 points ahead of her runner-up, the Czech Barbora Krejcíková, who has won two places.
In a ranking turned upside down by the early end of Barty’s career, the Spaniard Paula Badosa jumped three places to settle for the first time in her career on the third step of the podium.
The Japanese Naomi Osaka, former world No.1, takes advantage of her final in Miami to gain 42 ranks and climb to 35and global place.
One of the other notable advances of the week is that of the American Jessica Pegula (13and), which moved up eight places after its semi-final in Florida.
Alizé Cornet (34and+2) is still the only Frenchwoman among the top 50.
