(OTTAWA) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has condemned the “shocking and horrifying” killings of civilians in the Ukrainian town of Boutcha, saying Russia bears responsibility.

“We strongly condemn the killing of civilians in Ukraine, remain mobilized to hold the Russian regime accountable,” Trudeau tweeted.

“Those responsible for these shocking and horrifying attacks will be brought to justice,” he added.

Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly also denounced the atrocities committed in Boutcha. “The news of the senseless killings of innocent civilians in Ukraine, including in Bucha, is shocking. Canada will spare no means, including through our support for war crimes investigations, to ensure that perpetrators of these acts are held accountable,” she wrote on Twitter.

Ukraine and Western countries on Sunday accused the Russian army of war crimes, after the discovery of mass graves and “executed” civilians in Boutcha, near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv.

Nearly 300 corpses were buried in these mass graves. AFP saw at least 20 bodies, all in civilian clothes, littering a single city street.
