Saturday February 2 is World Autism Awareness Day, a disability that affects 700,000 people in France, including 100,000 young people. On this occasion, the 19/20 met a father who raises his autistic son alone.

Every Wednesday, Grégoire Lemaire and his son Nathanaël stroll on the beach in Dunkirk (North)like a sort of little ritual. Together, father and son draw in the sand. At 9 years old, Nathanaël is autistic, and it is therefore difficult to capture his attention. “What is needed is above all to have patience, to try to offer something that will interest him”explains his father.

Grégoire Lemaire takes care of his son alone all week. Nathanaël is in CE1, in an adapted class, but he was recently expelled from school. “On November 9, he had a crisis, and the crisis could not be managed, and therefore, suddenly, a deschooling was pronounced”explains his father. Today, he has regained his class, but only for a few hours a week. To take care of his son, Grégoire Lemaire gave up his job. The small family survives on less than 900 euros per month.
