It is snowing in the Hautes-Alpes on Friday and Saturday, particularly in Est-Queyras, Haute-Ubaye and Nord-Thabor. The department expects heavy snowfall above 600 meters altitude. “The accumulations will be around 20 cm, up to 30/40 cm in Haut-Guil, rather 5/10 cm from Dévoluy to Écrins”, explains the prefecture of the Hautes-Alpes. Saturday morning, it will fall again up to 40 cm on the Queyras. This should form a layer of some 80 cm of snow on this mass.
The department’s road service is on alert. Five snow plows are ready to intervene. Even if snow tires are no longer compulsory in the Hautes-Alpes since Thursday, it is advisable to keep them to go up to the resort. If not, “you don’t have to wait to be stuck in the snow to put on chains”, recalls Marcel Cannat, vice-president of the Hautes-Alpes departmental council in charge of roads. You have to anticipate to avoid creating traffic jams or accidents.
