Calvados: tensions around a wind farm project near a military cemetery

Jean-Louis will not cultivate on part of his land this year: he said he was ready to welcome a wind turbine. If the project sees the light of day, he will pocket 3,700 euros per year. “We will have to live with the times. We will run out of renewable energies, so why not”, adds the latter. If the tests are conclusive, four to six wind turbines will be installed in the town of Le Manoir (Calvados), for an income of 30,000 to 40,000 euros per year. “If there are several projects like this on the national territory, we may be able to have energy autonomy”explains the mayor of the village, Yves Le Guillois.

The project is already in turmoil. The future wind turbines would be located less than two kilometers from the Bazenville military cemetery (Calvados). Too close, according to its mayor, who evokes a duty of memory for the British soldiers who died in combat on the landing beaches. “We don’t have to have this visual when families come to gather here”, he said. Environmental and local associations have already begun their mobilization.
