Four days after the death of a 33-year-old young man in Sevran, Seine-Saint-Denis during a check, the policeman who shot the shot was placed in police custody on Wednesday for “intentional violence”, indicates the prosecutor of Bobigny. New tensions and urban violence erupted overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, and eight people were arrested.
“At this stage of the investigation carried out by the IGPN, he is placed in police custody on the charge of voluntary violence having led to death without intention to give it, aggravated by his quality as a person depositary of public authority and the ‘use of a weapon’, announced in the early evening the prosecutor Eric Mathais in a press release. The official could not be interviewed earlier because he had been hospitalized “in a state of shock”.
Security device deployed
On Saturday, a team from the Aulnay-sous-Bois anti-crime brigade checked a stolen van driven by the victim. “A policeman came up to the driver’s window and, in circumstances that have yet to be determined, fired his weapon – a single shot – as the van slammed into motion again”, traced the prosecutor Eric Mathais. Seriously injured in the left shoulder blade, the driver died at the end of the afternoon in the hospital, and the autopsy confirmed that the shooting was the cause of death.
Since then, several municipalities in Seine-Saint-Denis have been the scene of clashes and scuffles every night. An important security device will be deployed again this Wednesday evening.
The family’s lawyer files a murder complaint
This is a “hit and run with overthrown policeman”tweeted the Union of National Police Commissioners.
“He had the legal background of a young person who evolved in a difficult neighborhood, who was looking for himself, but who no longer owed anything to justice”, commented to AFP the long-time lawyer of the victim, Me Steeve Ruben. He is now one of the family’s lawyers, and announces that he has filed a complaint with civil action for murder.
