In eastern Ukraine, the city of Kharkiv has been shelled for a month. The population hides in the metro to escape the bombardments.
In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, a strike has just fallen on a residential area on Tuesday, March 29. The area is constantly shelled by Russian forces. The buildings are destroyed and the streets deserted by the inhabitants. Enemy drones fly over the neighborhood: Russian forces are less than three kilometers away.
The inhabitants of this district of Kharkiv have been living underground in the Ukrainian metro for a month. They failed to flee the city. Among the people in hiding, women, children and old people. “Sometimes I still go out for a few minutes, but here it’s safer”explains a resident who arranged a bedroom with her husband. Those who arrived at the start of the war live in the metro trains. Long queues form: a local humanitarian association distributes a meal.
