Around 12:30 p.m., a tile came off the ceiling of the Ville-Marie tunnel, which crosses a good part of downtown Montreal. The debris began to hang for several meters, low enough to reach the height of the cars traveling on the multiple traffic lanes.
A motorist hit him head-on. “Fortunately, it’s only material damage,” said Sarah Bensadoun, spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport (MTQ). The motorist has the option of filing a claim with the ministry to cover the damage. »
Two of the three tunnel lanes were closed until around 2 p.m. Mme Bensadoun could not confirm to The Press the size of the debris or the reasons that may have led to its fall. “An assessment is underway by an engineer,” she explains.
“Maintenance operations” are carried out in the Ville-Marie tunnel on a “more than regular” basis, says Mme Bensadoun. Since 2020, a major refurbishment project, worth about two billion dollars and lasting ten years, is also in progress.
