Russian and Belarusian citizens bought European nationalities, for a fee. The European Commission is tightening the screw and would like to withdraw this sesame from them.
A mild climate, an Orthodox religious culture, an advantageous banking system… For ten years, Cyprus has become an Eldorado for Russian citizens, in particular thanks to the granting of what are called “golden passports”. For a fee, wealthy Russians were able to acquire Cypriot nationality, and therefore European citizenship. The entry ticket is 2.5 million euros.
To combat this phenomenon, the European Commission adopted a recommendation on Monday 28 March. “The Commission calls on Member States to immediately repeal any existing golden passport system. ‘European Union in connection with the war in Ukraine’, said Anitta Hipper, European Commission Spokesperson for Migration.
