Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk has died of an illness, the team announced Monday night. He was 62 years old.
The team announced the death via a statement from his family, mentioning “an illness which he faced with determination and courage”.
The statement does not specify what the illness was. A team spokesperson did not immediately respond to a message asking for further details.
Melnyk underwent a liver transplant in 2015 after a public campaign to find a donor. He had owned the Senators since 2003, when he bought the club for $92 million. $.
The Toronto native was involved in other businesses across Canada. In 2010, he had an estimated net worth of $1.21 billion.
