The war in Ukraine shows France’s dependence on Russian oil and gas. Calls are increasing to save money and change our habits. A situation reminiscent of the first oil shock in 1973.

In 1973 as today, it is already a war which is at the origin of the first oil crisis. This is the Yom Kippur War in Israel. The oil-producing countries therefore decide on a historic blockage. The courses are multiplied by four. At the pump, prices rise by 40 euro cents overnight. “I suffer the consequences like everyone else”lamented a motorist at the time. President Georges Pompidou thus called on the population to “save gas and electricity”.

To save fuel, you have to drive slower, 90 km/h on the road. Lighting is also limited at night. In 1979, with the second oil shock, the hunt for waste was launched. In a car, you have to be light-footed and drive smoothly. The dwellings are better insulated in order to lower the heating. Priority is given to nuclear power. Less air conditioning, heating or light, at work and at home, the hunt for waste is launched again, but in 2022 version this time.
