Pulled by a “catch-up effect”French film production in 2021 regained “pre-health crisis levels“, according to figures published by the National Center for Cinematography and the Moving Image (CNC). A total of 340 films were approved by the CNC in 2021, compared to 237 the previous year. This increase mainly reflects a “catching up” : many films could not be shot in 2020 due to the health crisis and confinements.
On average over the two years of the pandemic, 289 films were shot per year, compared to an average of 300 per year previously. On the investment side, the 2021 vintage marks a record since 2016, with 1.1 billion euros invested.
Four “blockbusters” à la française were put into production during the year: Notre Dame is burningby Jean-Jacques Annaud, released on March 16, Asterix and Obelix and the Middle Kingdom, with football star Zlatan Ibrahimovic alongside Guillaume Canet, Gilles Lellouche as Obélix and Marion Cotillard, and two parts of a new adaptation of Three Musketeerswith Vincent Cassel and Eva Green in the lead roles.
After the implementation of a vast system of guarantee against the risk of contamination of film crew members with Covid-19, production has resumed very clearly: in total, 6,946 film shooting days were recorded in 2021. , against 4,200 the previous year, and about 6,000 usually.
