Nineteen people were killed Sunday evening March 27 in Mexico during a shooting in the State of Michoacan, ravaged by the violence of criminal gangs. They were 16 men and three women. Several other people were injured and taken to hospital.

Authorities said law enforcement arrived at the scene around 10:30 p.m. local time following reports of an attack on a venue often used to host illegal cockfighting bets. Authorities have given no explanation for the cause of the shooting.

Michoacan and the neighboring state of Guanajuato are two of Mexico’s most violent states, due to turf wars between rival gangs involved in drug trafficking and other illegal activities such as the trade in stolen fuel.

In February, 10 to 17 people were killed there, according to Mexican media, in an attack that looked like a settling of scores between rival gangs. According to official figures, more than 340,000 people have been murdered in Mexico since December 2006, when the Mexican government launched a controversial military offensive against drug cartels.
