In the Landes, volunteers roll up their sleeves to clean up the coast. About sixty rubbish collection operations took place on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 March. A way to continue to raise awareness.
A big beach cleanup that draws the crowd. They are at least 700 people, come to scrutinize the beach of Labenne in the Landes, apparently very clean, but not quite if we look a little closer. Among the participants, many residents for whom cleaning this beach is a habit. Each spring, this cleaning is organized by the Surfrider association.
Everything that is collected makes it possible to carry out an inventory of waste on the European coast. Waste is mostly plastics in different forms. They can even take microscopic forms. All the fauna of the oceans would today be impacted by plastics. “We find them little by little in zooplankton, which is at the beginning of the food chain, until reaching tuna for example, which is almost at the top of the food chain”explains Manon Harrwin, research assistant in marine micropollutants.
