In 1940, Italy joined Germany in the war against France and Great Britain. Duce’s armies settle on the Côte d’Azur, in Nice and Menton: Mussolini’s project consists in recovering the territories that Piedmont-Sardinia ceded to France in 1860, namely Savoy and the county of Nice . In November 1942, the Germans invaded the southern zone and gradually replaced the Italians in the Alpes Maritimes as the occupying force.
On August 15, 1944, two months after the Normandy landings, General Alexander Patch’s 7th army landed on the Côte d’Azur, at Dramont, not far from Saint Raphaël. This landing leads to the liberation of the main cities of the Côte d’Azur. The American soldiers who lost their lives during the operations are buried in the American cemetery in Draguignan, which Franck Balbi is telling you about today.
