Ivan’s funeral Colonnawho died after a violent attack in prison, are held on Friday March 25, in Corsica. The funeral procession heads towards the village of Cargesewhere thousands of people are expected to pay their respects.
In silence and meditation, the funeral procession left Ajaccio (South Corsica)on the morning of Friday, March 25. Inside, the body of Yvan Colonna. The convoy is escorted by his relatives and anonymous people, in the direction of Cargese (South Corsica). The family stronghold Colonna is about to say goodbye to a local child. The activist’s name and face are displayed everywhere near of the church where the funeral will be celebrated. In the village, dozens of Corsican flags adorn the balconies. “We only deal with mourning today. There is no politics“, assures a resident. “He is the shepherd of Cargèse. He is loved by all“, adds a resident.
In tribute to the activist, several traders on the island have closed their curtains for the day. A banner was unfurled at Bastia station (Upper Corsica)where no train will run during the day. “We will honk at 3 p.m. with the trains in Bastia, Calvi (Upper Corsica) and Ajaccio (Southern Corsica). And sailors should do the same with boats”says Charles Finidoriof the STC union CFC².
