Seen from the sky, it is one of the most sumptuous places on the planet. A natural beauty, but fragile, because the Great Barrier Reef in Australia is inexorably whitening. The warming of the oceans causes a withering and discoloration of this marine jewel. “Temperatures on the reef over the past week have been above average by half a degree to two degrees in most places, up to four degrees at times. These thermal anomalies have worsened since the beginning of March“, explains David Wachenfeld, scientific director of the Great Barrier Reef.

Since 2016, this is the fourth episode of bleaching for the Great Barrier Reef. The impact of global warming on the site, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is being scrutinized. Australia has already announced an investment of several billion dollars to save the Great Barrier Reef.
