Several French groups, such as Danone, Decathlon or Leroy Merlin, persist in remaining in Russia and are accused by Ukraine of being “war sponsors”. Present on the 19/20 set, Thursday March 24, journalist Viktor Frédéric sheds light.

Do the French groups which continue their activity in Russia feed Vladimir Putin’s coffers? “In reality, it is quite difficult to know precisely how much these companies pay to the Russian state each year. The best way to get an idea is to look at their turnover in Russia”, explains journalist Viktor Frédéric, present, Thursday, March 24, on the set of 19/20. For example, it amounts to 3.2 billion euros for Auchan in 2021, and 4.2 billion euros for Leroy Merlin in 2020.

“Huge sums, which necessarily generate taxes, duties”to which are added the contributions on wages, adds the journalist. “In total, it would be enough to represent several tens of millions of euros, according to our information, each year”, he concludes. Some companies claim that leaving Russia would mean “make a present” in the Kremlin, because they would risk expropriation and thus enrich the Russian state. Others promise compensation, like Danone, which announced that it would donate the profits made during the war to humanitarian associations working in Ukraine.
