Miller had a 4.75 ERA in 40 games last season, his third with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The left-handed pitcher with the confusing slippery pitch pitched for 16 seasons, and with seven major league teams. In 2016, he was voted Most Valuable Player to his team in the American League Championship Series, with Cleveland.

Long involved with the Players Association, Miller has for the past several months served on the union’s subcommittee in negotiations with team owners for the renewal of the collective bargaining agreement.

“Andrew’s selfless, tireless and tireless advocacy on behalf of his comrades and future players during difficult times will be as much a part of his baseball legacy as his extraordinary on-field accomplishments,” the union said in a statement Thursday.

Thanks to his slippery ball, Miller has established himself as one of the best relievers in Major League Baseball. His impact was felt by the way he was used, especially by Cleveland manager Terry Francona in the 2016 playoffs.

Besides Cleveland, and the Cardinals, Miller played with the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers and Florida Marlins before they became the Miami Marlins.
