The right side of RC Lens has been called by Didier Deschamps to prepare for the next two friendly matches for the France team.
At 29, Jonathan Clauss could look like a former Clairefontaine among the young players who make up the France team. However, the Lensois right-back is taking his first steps at the national football center, a few days before the friendly matches against Ivory Coast and South Africa.
While he has been playing in Lens for two seasons, he has mainly known the National and Ligue 2, playing in less upscale clubs like Avranches, Raon-l’Étape or Quevilly-Rouen. “I don’t realize yet, he explains when entering Clairefontaine. I see the crests on the right, on the left, the forest, I saw the ‘Clairefontaine’ sign, it’s weird but it’s beautiful.”
Beautiful like those first training sessions spent with his new teammates. Players with whom he never thought he would share such a moment. “These are people I’ve never known, I only saw them on TV, continues the Lensois. I asked ‘where is the jogging?’ and Olivier took me and said ‘that’s jogging’. There I look, there were four of us, I see Olivier Giroud, Hugo Lloris, Raphaël Varane and I said to myself ‘and me, what am I doing here?’ “
Far from being here as a supporter, Jonathan Clauss hopes to register in the long term with the France team. He could know his first selection on Friday, against the Ivory Coast.
