Since the start of the war in Ukraine, hundreds of international companies have left Russia. On the other hand, French groups are resisting despite economic sanctions.

Auchan, Decathlon, Renault, Danone, Leroy Merlin… Several French companies still do not want to leave Russia. In Ukraine, a Leroy Merlin sign was hit on Sunday March 20 by a Russian missile which targeted a shopping center in kyiv, the capital. Amid the damage, Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Gonrachenko challenged the French company in a video. “I’m talking to Leroy Merlin. Look at what is the country with which you continue to work. And with the taxes you pay there, in Russia, they will buy and produce missiles that will produce damage, like here“, he condemned.

Leroy Merlin, Auchan and Decathlon are part of the same group, Mulliez. Decathlon achieves only 1 to 2% of its turnover in Russia, but the company says it thinks above all of its employees on site. “We have 2,500 employees who have been there since 2006, and we have to ask ourselves whether we are letting go of these people overnight.“, justified the company in the columns of Parisian. The car manufacturer Renault is also well established in Russia, with three factories and 40,000 employees. It is even its second market after France. Finally, the oil company Total owns shares of hydrocarbon exploitation projects in Russia. For the time being, he has simply announced the cessation of new investments in the country.
