Nelson scored at 4:17, 5:55 and 19:40, securing the fourth hat-trick of his career.
Going 1:38 after his first goal, Nelson’s second goal gave the Islanders a 3-1 cushion.
Nelson completed in an empty net. He has 27 goals this season, a personal high.
Ryan Pulock has scored in the middle period for the Islanders, who have won five of their last six games.
Semyon Varlamov made 37 saves, being beaten by Denis Gurianov and Jacob Peterson.
Jake Oettinger stopped 21 shots for the Stars, who were losing for the fourth time in five games.
