This is a first in a context of war: Russia declared having used, on Friday March 18, a hypersonic missile in western Ukraine. This type of armament can pierce enemy defense systems.
Russia says it used for the first time, Friday, March 18, a Kinjal missile, which means “the dagger” in French. This missile can reach 12,000 km/h, and challenges anti-aircraft defense systems by changing trajectory. According to Moscow (Russia), it is impossible to intercept. He allegedly targeted the town of Delyatyn (Ukraine), 100 km from the Romanian border, and “destroyed a major underground warehouse of missiles and ammunition of the Ukrainian army aviation“, according to the spokesman of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Igor Konashenkov.
Russia is the first country in the world to develop these hypersonic missiles. The Kremlin army has other hypersonic missiles like the Avangard, capable of carrying a nuclear charge. By claiming to fire a less efficient Kinjal missile in Ukraine, is the country issuing a warning to NATO? “Russia is showing Westerners (…) that it is capable of striking them without these nuclear powers being able to prevent it“, explains General Vincent Desportes, former director of the school of war. The firing of a Kinjal has not been confirmed by any country.
